Have you ever made plans to go for a long walk, somewhere spectacular, which involves getting in the car, and at the last minute think why waste time in the car when you can just start walking from your front door instead?
Leo and I had grand plans recently to go walking close to Spiez, on the Lake of Thun, doing a four-hour circular wanderweg. Spiez is probably only 45 minutes away in the car, but the whole thought of wasting 45 minutes of glorious sunshine sitting in a car put us off enough to search for a plan B. And luckily, where we live, there is always a plan B.
So we walked down to the Wohlensee (Lake of Wohlen) and could not believe our luck – the house with the magnificent magnolia tree was having an Open Day, because it’s not just a house, it’s also a revamped flour mill! Read more about it in another blog post coming soon.
After an hour and a half, we stopped for lunch in a nice spot on the lake with what could only be described as Swiss rednecks for company. I couldn’t understand everything they were saying but Leo said the language was ripe.
Then up the hill into Murzelen, passing plenty of goats, cows, rape seed fields and some old Fiats before stopping for a beer at Restaurant Sternen, a very well known place for dinner. As tempting as it was to catch the bus home, we kept walking and made it home after five hours – which includes 30 mins for lunch and 30 mins for the beers. Very relaxing!
