The clock has just struck midnight, but I’m still going to say this is the post for April 5 … even though technically it’s now April 6. Who’s counting?!
We had a great day today on our Easter egg hunt – both Leos did an amazing job organising it all. On Friday we painted the eggs, Saturday afternoon the Leos hid the eggs (in the pouring rain) and today we went a’searchin.
Pastora’s Leo’s brother, sister and sister’s boyfriend joined us as well. We started near the Bern/Belp airport and finished at an outdoor picnic area further towards the city. Eichholz is also a camping place in summer, and the starting point for a great summer swim in the Aare. I say starting point, because the river flows so quickly, you’re transported to a new destination in seconds.
So, I’ll keep this short and let the photos tell the story. All up, we walked three hours and had plenty of ‘good for your mental health’ laughs. I’ve never been on an Easter egg hunt of this scale before. Next year, the guys said the girls have to organise everything – first thing we’ll do is paint the eggs a brighter colour!
Wishing you a wonderful day.
(I’m posting this so late because after we came home, we finished a Swedish TV series called ‘GSI Göteborg’ (which is also known as the ‘Johan Falk’ series) and then started on the American version of the Danish series ‘Forbrydelsen’, called ‘The Killing’. Scandinavian thriller and police shows are addictive (even though we’re watching the American version … in German … with English subtitles … I’m babbling and waffling, sorry, I’m tired. Enjoy the pics. Goodnight!)
- The start of the Easter egg hunt. Leo (in red) gives instructions to Pastora, Gabriel, Tamara and Daniel
- After searching all over the place, in the wrong places, we were sent this picture as a clue
- Daniel finds the first egg. And the second egg … And an empty chocolate rabbit packet …
- We were told there were six eggs and three chocolate rabbits here … Why did we paint the eggs brown like the leaves on the ground?
- We found two rabbits and one empty packet, and two eggs (one had already been eaten)
- Luckily one of the two eggs also had the next clues wrapped around it. After 90 minutes searching in the one spot, we left the four missing eggs for mother earth to enjoy
- A viewing platform, over a still side arm of the Aare river, which looks like an old motorcycle “Cage of Death” from a circus. Remember those?!
- Onwards to our next section. We had to find a wooden bridge …
- Found it! Now to find the eggs …
- Love the old wooden bridges
- The water was clear, the clouds went away and blue skies brightened our spirits after that unfruitful original search
- The water flows away from the bridge towards Bern
- Luckily this search proved much easier. We found the six eggs and three rabbits quickly!
- Directions for the next stage which we didn’t exactly follow to the letter …
- We crossed the bridge (which we weren’t supposed to do) but for me it was a bonus because we walked on the side that is part of the Swiss Camino, or Jakobsweg, which leads to Santiago de Compostela in Spain
- Great day for walking, even if we were on the wrong side of the river!
- I never knew there was a big waterpark here. You learn something new …
- Because we were on the wrong side, we had to catch a little ferry, which was quite a highlight. Never done that before
- The boat is attached to a fixed line, which let us glide across, using a rudder, easily instead of fighting against the strong current
- Pastora, Tamara and Daniel enjoying our unexpected but much-appreciated boat trip. The ferryman makes a killing at 2 Francs per person
- The third and final clue …
- Walking to the final destination
- And we made it after more than three hours, to be greeted with food, drinks and a blessed fire
- Even though the sun was shining, it was about 5 degrees because of an incredibly cold wind! My hands were frozen. And that’s the end of the Easter egg hunt!
How wonderful. Sounds like a great day and sounds like the whole thing was worth all the effort – you all did well making the eggs and the Leos did well with the hiding. Can totally understand what you mean about the colours! Hope the animal enjoyed the chocolate/eggs – not sure the chocolate would have been good for them. I am surprised that the goodies in the bridge had not been taken by someone!
I am about to start the last series of Montelbano – have thoroughly enjoyed and will be sad when it finishes. I am a huge fan of Catarella (although they overdo the door thing). Thanks again for passing them on.

Initially, the goodies on and around the bridge were very well hidden. We took a photo of them all together to prove to the bosses we were ready to start the next stage. I’m sure if they were all together like that someone would have pinched them. Not all Swiss are honest 🙂
Glad you’ve been enjoying Montalbana. Catarella is normally pretty good but, yes, sometimes he’s a bit much! Hope you’ve enjoyed looking into the backyard and seeing it all spic and span. What an effort!
